Headshots: Retouched to Show Your Best to the Modern Audience!

Retouch sample image of a female headshot. Mouse over the image to see the image after retouching. The amount of retouching is determined by the package chosen and customer consultation.

Move your mouse cursor on the image to see the image after retouching. Note for casting headshot clients: headshots for actors, theatrical, TV, commercial should be retouched only lightly, and we adjust the retouching to appropriate levels, unless the client has a strong opinion. These types of headshots are primarily to show exactly how you look. As such, we'll focus more on capturing the best of you rather than retouching.

Just like a perfect dish is always prepared from the best and freshest ingredients in skilled hands, a perfect headshot starts with a perfect in-camera image. During the photography sessions, we pay close attention to details such as makeup, hair styling, expression, lighting work, and camera angles to capture images that are as perfect as possible in camera (picture in the left). This is, however, only the best and freshest ingredients, and not the end product.

Modern people are so used to seeing a better-than-reality portraiture that the reality, even when captured perfectly, is often not good enough. Headshots for commercial use, such as business headshots, glamour shots and creative professional headshots are prime examples. Move your mouse cursor over the picture in the left, and you'll see the difference between the "reality" and what we are used to seeing. The unedited picture was taken with our usual setup for business headshots, and this picture looks good, but only until you see the edited one! This is one of many reasons why you should work with Beaupix Studio for your headshots...

Each headshot package comes with basic editing of final selection images, along with your use license (usage rights). For the basic editing, retouching similar to this example will be applied, although the strength of the retouching may be adjusted to your style. During editing, we pay close attention to the following details:

  • skin should look soft and healthy tone
  • hair should look crisp
  • eyes look lifelike
  • blemish and imperfections should be diminished
  • clean up other details for clear-cut look

However, there is downside to retouching. Some people may think that Photoshop can fix almost any faults in the image, and there is no need to spend effort in taking the perfect in-camera images. This is entirely false. The best, natural looking results are almost always produced from best raw images with a minimum of editing. This is the best and least expensive way to produce the optimal results. It is true that there are many editing techniques that can be used today, but what is less known is that the heavier the editing, the less naturally the image may look.

Custom Retouching Option

In most cases, the standard basic editing illustrated above is adequate. However, if you are very conscious about some of your features, such as round face, double chin, uneven eyes, etc., we offer a custom retouching option. This includes all of the basic editing features plus some photoillustrative retouching. Basically, anything that requires to move, scale or replace facial contour, body line or any facial feature is covered in this option. Many small business owners, consultants, and any other image-conscious professionals are happy with the results of this option, but of course, none would want to have the unedited images seen, so there is no example. Custom retouching takes considerably more time and skills than basic editing, and the workload depends on your requirement. Please inquire for estimates.
