Headshot Photographer for Actors, Musicians & Creative Professionals

Step #1: Choose Headshot Photography Styles

Theatrical/commercial headshot

The theatrical or commercial headshot is a rather specialized type of headshot, whose primary goal is to show the best of how you look. You want a fresh, clean-cut, straight-forward picture showing exactly you, but no more, and no less. Theatrical headshot captures you expressing a range of emotional states, including being happy, excited, pensive, serious, confused, or even angry. Commercial headshot tends to focus on positive tones, such as being happy or enthusiastic. TV/film style is similar.

Performer's and creative professional's headshot

The most elaborate headshot is perhaps for creative professionals. The client and photographer will discuss important elements in the photography, arrange for props, location, and other necessary elements, and create the image in the right environment to express the creativity and personality of the client.

Creative Headshots

Glamour headshot

The glamour photo is all about beauty and expression. The production begins with a collaboration between the client, an experienced make up artist and the photographer. This type of photography is usually ordered by fashion and beauty professionals, but we also serve talents and talent promotion agencies, as well as individual clients who want glamour portraits.

Vintage portraits

Between the creative professional's headshots and glamour headshots, there are a range of variations. Check out our 1940s, 1950s and 1960s look vintage portraits for more artsy headshot ideas. It often happens that good headshots are made from the interaction of the concept, makeup work, and photographic skills.

Beauty / Glamour headshots

Business executive portraits

Business portraits are usually taken within a conventional style appropriate for a corporate publication, but there are enough variables that influence how people react to your portrait. By choosing the proper outfit, lighting, posing, makeup and shooting angle, we can achieve a range of effects, which will best suit your purpose. Some people like to project an image of a powerful man who can be relied on, while others want a friendly and approachable image. Young professionals in a certain industry may want to take pictures that make them look older (and more experienced) than they are, while other people would rather look younger. Beaupix Studio listens to such requests and will use every known lighting technique and posing to achieve such goals.

Step #2: Choose Your Options

Makeup artist makes BIG differences, even for natural looks

Makeup makes a difference in a headshot, period. Beaupix Studio woks with several professional makeup artists, who are knowledgeable about the particular requirements of makeup for photoshoots, so that all you need to do is to ask for one when you book your shoot. Their fee typically starts at $125 for in-studio makeup and light hair styling for headshot photography. Unless you are very experienced in applying makeup, professional makeup application is strongly recommended and worth your money.

If you decide you will do the makeup yourself, or hire your own makeup artist, you can find makeup tips specifically for photography.

Studio session pro's and con's

Studio work is more comfortable and also easier to communicate during the shoot. There is no passers by nor loud noise. Studio work is very good for photography where clean-cut look is valued, such as conservative applications. However, those solid color backdrops can become monotonous very soon, if you shoot in studio for all of your pictures.

Location work pro's and con's

The best feature of location work is the wide variety of backgrounds, and the additional message you can pack in your headshot by choosing the right background. This adds more character. But, location work is usually not for the first time clients, because communicating in the outdoor location is not as easy as in studio. Also, eyes of the passers by can make you nervous, which will show in the picture. Booking a location shoot can be a bit tricky in New England, because of the unpredictable weather, but if you really like the fresh outdoor feel in your headshot, it can certainly be done.

How many looks do you need?

Here's my suggestion:

  • Actor's headshot in studio: 2 to 4 per session
  • Creative headshot in studio: 4 per session
  • Business headshot in studio: 2 looks

For outdoor locations, the number of alternative looks is about the same as above, but changing outfits can be a bit tricky. We usually add variations by changing the top and the background views.

If this is your first headshot session in a long while, you may get the best results near the end of the session, and very rarely in the first look. Therefore, 2 looks minimum is highly recommended, and even 3 to 4 looks for serious headshot shoppers.

Editing / Retouching

Are you conscious about your facial features? If no, the basic editing of the final selection images will meet your needs, and it is included in all headshot packages offered by Beaupix. But some people are concerned about double chins, uneven eyes, round face, and so on... In such case, we offer custom retouching option that will go further to move your facial contour or scale just one eye. Please click on the link above to learn about these options.

Step #3: Book Your Shoot

Some people do careful homework and research a few photographers' work before deciding where to go for their headshot sessions. Key factors are quality, style, experience, reputation and price. Please feel free to send me an email at shoot@beaupix.com with a brief description of your headshot needs, and I'll send you a PDF information package.

Book your shoot by emailing shoot@beaupix.com or calling 617 440 4676. If you get voice mail, the photographer will return your call as soon as possible. The response time can vary, depending on how busy we are on that particular day. If you need an urgent confirmation of availability and price quote, please leave a message requesting urgent response, together with description of your project.

In your inquiry, please include the following information (if unsure, provide some relevant information):

  • Your name, phone number, e-mail address
  • Headshot type (actor, performer, business executive, glamour)
  • How many looks you need to shoot (typically 2 or 4)
  • Whether you need a professional makeup artist on site
  • Any other specific request/question, if any

We are happy to see your current headshot, and discuss what you (and I) think about it, and then shoot a new one. Also, we are happy to see your favorite headshot of someone else, to use a starting point of your headshot. Please feel free to email them (by attachment or link) to shoot@beaupix.com.

Headshot Testimonials

Great Place to get Head Shots Written by Kristina C. on Insider Pages on 16 May 2010

As an aspiring actress and model, I went to Beaupix Studio to get head shots done for my portfolio. The location in South Boston was great and easy to get to and as soon as I met Ryuji (the photographer) I felt at ease. The make up artist he uses, Rose, made me look SO beautiful and it also looked like I wasn't even wearing any makeup. The natural look looked amazing. Then we starting shooting. Ryuji told me how to stand through great suggestions, not by TELLING me what to do. He made me feel really great by complimenting my best looks and asked for feedback the whole time, showing me the pictures he had taken and asking for suggestions. The whole experience was really special. Ryuji was professional and kind, but not uptight, and you definitely knew right away that he wasn't after your money. If I ever need any other modeling or acting work done, I will definitely be going to Beaupix. It was a great experience.

I found Ryuji on the web when I was looking for someone to take a business portrait (head shot).  I saw his rave reviews and sent him an e-mail.  He replied promptly and we scheduled a shoot at his convenient Central Square Cambridge location.  He offered tips on which hair gel looks best when photographed (shiny).  During the shoot, he helped me change my smile to get a variety of looks to choose from.  This was especially helpful for someone like me who has never done this before.  He has more than a decade of experience so I was not surprised when the proofs looked fantastic and the final edited version looked even better.  Ryuji was helpful and professional throughout.  I highly recommend his services and plan on hiring him in the future myself.

First and foremost, Ryuji's photos were more flattering than i could have imagined... aided by the make-up artist who was available as an option (and well worth it!)  I felt very comfortable, and now have the perfect head shot for my website, linked-in and other biz applications. Go Ryuji!

Beautiful Headshots! Written by Krista P. on Insider Pages on 4/20/2009

The studio is really nice and large, and the location was good. I got head shots done, and they turned out beautifully! The colors and light were exquisite, definitely my favorite head shots I've done in my life. There were so many great shots, and I am still in awe at how great they turned out! I He really captured my personality and essence into the photos, and I am truly thankful in working with him. I would highly recommend the Beaupix Studio any day.

Beaupix Studio (Photographer) is Great! Written by Duilio G. on Insider Pages on 07/19/2009

When I went to take head shots with Ryuji I was both pleased and surprised with his passion and knowledge for photography and because he made me feel so comfortable with the entire experience the time flew by so quickly. Not only does he provide an enjoyable atmosphere within the studio but he also takes amazing pictures that left me both satisfied and thankful that I went to him for my head shots.

I took headshots with Ryuji today. They are perfect. I got to his studio, we spoke for a while and went over outfits. then I met with the makeup artist and got into my first outfit. I sat down on the window sill as he finished adjusting the lights. He took a picture. He said... "okay, you're done," clearly joking. Then he showed me the camera. Wow... it was stunning, and on the first try. It usually takes me a few minutes to get comfortable with a photographer but Ryuji was just great. He takes photos with the intention of bringing out the subjects personality, not his own. I have had some bad experiences with photographers in the area where the pictures look nothing like me, because the photographer is trying to show themselves in the picture, and not me. Ryuji is completely different, he puts on some music of your taste and makes really insightful suggestions about a pose or hair or makeup and you end up with a fantastic set of photos. His studio is also great for backgrounds because there are a lot of fantastic doors and walls and colors and window views. My experience with Ryuji was fantastic and I would recommend him for any occasion. His photos really speak for themselves, though.

I'm a freelance musician, and I am trying to pick up more work.  In order to get noticed and look more professional, I needed creative headshots.  Something professional, but still something that looked like myself.  And I needed them sort of quickly.  So I searched online for a photographer in the Cambridge/Boston area and found Ryuji at Beaupix Studio.  His photography looked amazing, so I decided to give him a call.

I was really impressed with how professional Ryuji was on the phone.  He answered all of my questions and concerns, and he really made me feel comfortable about this whole headshot business.  I had never gotten a headshot taken before, so I was a little nervous.  In any case, I decided to go for it and scheduled an appointment.  I was so happy to find out that Ryuji is willing to work with you on scheduling - I have a hectic schedule, and so he was willing to work with me and we picked an odd time for the shoot - but it was awesome for me.
